Cape Breton Highland Wildlife Viewable During a Whale Watching Tour

Whale watching in the shadows of the Cape Breton Highlands enables us to offer Birding as part of every whale watching tour.

We see the following birds on nearly every whale tour:

  • Bald Eagles
  • Cormorants
  • Guillemots
  • Northern Gannets
  • Sea Gulls

Not as common, but still present quite often, are the following birds:

  • Blue Herons
  • Loons
  • Sea Ducks

In addition to birding, on the rare occasion we have a chance at sighting the following land-based wildlife:

  • Wild Allen's Free Range Horses
  • Moose
  • Bear
  • Deer

We are often close to the magnificent coastal Cape Breton Highlands while whale watching because both the baleen and toothed whales follow bait fish or krill in close to land. In fact, the nature of our coastline, with steep cliffs and shelfs both above and below the water, create an ideal area for sustainable marine life, resulting in a high population of wildlife both on land and at sea.

Note: for those looking for a more direct experience with Highland Wildlife on land, with the possibly of spotting a moose, we highly recommend the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, or, better yet, book a guided tour with Cabot Trail Adventures.
